Twa Robotics was an educational competition for students, for which they have to build and program a robot that has to perform a task. During the process of developing and building a robot, several things can go wrong and mistakes are hard to recover. We participated Twa Robotics Rescue in 2006 and to recover mistakes, we let our robot play tones. Through the tones we could discover the mistakes. Because it costs lots of time to recover those simple mistakes, we made plans for the Robot Simulator.

A simulator tries to simulate the real world as real as possible. The Robot Simulator calculates how a robot would react in a real environment. Robots use sensors to react on the environment. Every sensor has its own function. A touchsensor measures pressure, a lightsensor measures the color of the ground. Almost 99 percent of the Twa Robotics Rescue participants use the user-friendly Lego mindstorms kit, because you can easily build and program it. The Robot Simulator is fully compatible with Lego mindstorms, so a large number of students can use the Robot Simulator.

A diverse selection of tools is available for programming LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT robots. Three programming environments available from LEGO include NXT-G, ROBOLAB and ROBOTC, and the open source community has developed alternative feature-rich solutions. An eye-opening article by Dick Swan compares and contrasts leading programming environments and related software tools at www.botmag.com. This is a must-read for teachers, students and hobbyists deciding on the best approach to programming the hugely popular NXT robot platform. This article also describes powerful debugging software that will help the NXT programmer.
